CAL was described by Yoshimura and colleagues in 2008. Part of the lipoaspirate is processed to isolate the stromal vascular fraction, which is then combined with the untreated portion of the fat before grafting, with the stated aim of improving graft retention. CAL is one defined protocol within the broader category of SVF-assisted fat grafting; the two terms are related but not interchangeable, because SVF-assisted grafting also covers protocols that differ in cell dose, isolation method and the ratio of processed to untreated fat. Reported retention varies across studies, and isolation method and cell dose are not standardised between centres.
