Definition and composition
Adipose tissue is more than fat cells. Between the adipocytes lies a stromal and vascular network. When fat is digested with collagenase or processed mechanically and then centrifuged, the buoyant adipocytes separate from a cell pellet: this pellet is the stromal vascular fraction. Its composition varies with the person, the harvest site and the processing method, which is why studies characterize SVF by cell count, viability and surface markers rather than treating it as a single defined product.[1]
How it is obtained

Applications
SVF is studied for tissue repair in orthopedics, wound care and other fields, and it is used in aesthetic surgery to enrich fat grafts (cell-assisted lipotransfer) with the aim of improving graft survival.[5] Most applications outside cell-assisted grafting remain investigational.[3]
Evidence and safety
A 2026 exhaustive literature review examined the safety profile of autologous adipose-derived SVF in clinical use, finding that reported adverse events are largely those of the harvesting and injection procedures themselves.[1] The ISSCR guidelines caution that processing steps can change the original function of the cells, so each use needs its own safety and efficacy data.[2] Regulators, including the U.S. FDA, have warned consumers about unapproved stem cell products marketed with unsupported claims.[4]
